According to the Center for Disease Control…
- There are now more than 385,000 people in the United States with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), the form of chronic kidney disease in which life can be sustained only by dialysis or transplantation.
- Current preventive care for ESRD include the control or prevention of hypertension by maintaining stringent blood pressure levels to a target of 130/80 mm Hg.
- The level and type of proteinuria often determines the extent of damage and whether you are at risk for developing progressive kidney failure. Proteinuria is also associated with cardiovascular disease: damaged blood vessels may lead to heart failure or stroke as well as kidney failure.
